there are two reasons:
1) the docks are inside the bows, so they are protected
2) there are some similarities to the look of galaxies

maybe sam can tell you some other reasons ;)

It should also be possible to use some fog effects (like fog on the ground). That would be a really cool effect! I'll try to insert several possibilities to show our features as particle effects (steam, smoke, sparks...) , animated objects (cool doors, [inaccessible] elevators, holo-projections...)...

Space Station Interior
