This is a very good idea, I think it is also important that we use this opportunity to rename all the media file in a sensible way. There are lots of files where no one knows what they mean, for example "MyShip.mesh" or something like that. There should be a consistent patter for the names of models...

I don't know where you take the time for doing such great research studies from, but thanks for your great work. I find the part about story and excitement especially interesting. now that i have understood your elaborate concept, i think it is a good approach. still think that 5 upgrade categories are enough: reactor, hull, weapons, electronics and cargo bay. the shield could be part of the hull and the sensors and computer systems could be grouped under the name electronics...

Strange trac behavior...

For about a week or so have occasionally gotten a weird error when loading an orxonox-trac-page. Instead of the desired page I got an error message like the following:

After a 1 or 2 reloads, the page showed up properly. Am I the only one, who gets this weird error?

This sounds great. I'm sure, a server would attract some attention from other students.

Still I would not rent a server until the game is playable and use a ETH-server for testing purposes (if possible).

But if Nowic rents the server anyway, then why not.

On several pages, one can read about the second space. However, it seems that none says what this really is. Can someone explain? What about the first space race?

Does it mean: When space travel became cost-effective, major companies decided to expand into space/onto the moon and other planets?

i think your story snippet is really good. it is good to have tightly woven and consistent background. especially, i like the idea that the player gradually learns more and more about the earth/system/universe and is not overwhelmed by unneeded information at the beginning.
