Moonstation

Post by KK7c13 » Fri Apr 13, 2007 6:13 pm

I just started building the moon station. I created some concept arts and even started building the station in radiant. I think, I have to reduce my curved-faces-usage, because it really takes a lot of time.

go to https://dev.orxonox.net/wiki/MoonStation

btw: Where can i get some old *.oxw files with water/movies/blinking stuff in it (btw the syntax)... just to test it out :P

I can imagine that the roundness takes some time...

Why not make the top levels (on the surface) somewhat round, as they are covered by this big dome, and make the lower ones more rectangular, as they had to be dug out...
Maybe also reduce the number of shown pipes and cables... reduces the modeling time by a hundredfold.

BTW: Where is this station built? Thinking of a military installation, a lot is not shown to the public. I was think of a slope, or even inside a crater (but that would render the windows almost useless)

I am just letting my mind speak - take whatever ideas are useful and discard the rest!

cheers

Very nice work. Today I've talked to Fabian. He will definitely come next Thursday.

I think I should talk about the specifics of the moon station and the role of the player in the moon station level:

The moon station has been built a few decades ago by the UCA (former: USA). With the station on the moon, the UCA can control large parts of the upper atmosphere and the space around. Using the gravity of the Earth rockets and projectiles shot from the station enter an orbiting course. Like this enemies and of course aliens can be shot down even when they hide behind the planet.
The UCA never wanted to hide the station, because it was too big and mightyy.

Now when the player lands on the moon, the station is deserted and partly destroyed by the Noxons.
His mission will be to find a space ship somewhere in the station and to leave. That's because the current spaceship is unable to enter the atmosphere.

We thought it would be good, if the player lands with his old spaceship near a destroyed laser turret (defending the station before, but destroyed by the Noxons) in a yard. He will then enter the station through an air lock or a hole in the station. Alternatively it's also possible to crash the space ship into the station.

It's a military station, so you won't be able to go into a lot of rooms. Most of the rooms are sealed by the security system. Also part of the security system are the numerous anti person turrets in the station, which attack the player. The player may be able to turn them off or he can just run through the level and destroy the turrets.

We'd like some rooms and stuff like this, where we can get attacked and look around. The goal is to get that space ship, so we go to the hangar. Actually there are going to be to hangars. One with an average space ship and the other one with a state of the art ship. Of course the player has to jump through a few hoops to get the better ship.

You can have a look at

http://svn.orxonox.net/data/old_trunk/worlds/

There you should find pretty much everything.

Yea, the station ideas and sketches rock. I like dark frightening high tech rooms!

Looking forward to taking a walk there :D

I just added some more. My Idea till now is, that you have to go to the command bridge on the top of the station in order to open the gate to the hangar... sadly some parts of the station are broken, so you can't just use the stairs and have to take some detours.
In general I want the player to change a lot between the inside of the station and some rooms where you can see the sky (because I like the skybox a lot  ).

Looks great, you're definitively skilled ;)

When I built my bsp model, I had some serious problems finding good textures. I searched the whole web, but all textures were copyrighted or had some restrictions that didn't match our license.
In the end, I used some textures from nexuiz, but they were all small (256x256) and not really diversified.

Now I've started to create some textures of my own. I will soon go into more detail about that in the content creation section. I'm sure you will be able to use some of them, so don't spend too much time on texturing now.

btw:
If I look at the bsp build time I'm really glad I've a new cpu . Even though I think a final map will compile about 5mins at least
This really gave me a laugh. If you use the -vis flag (and you will have to use it as soon as you need hide-portals to improve the performance (another thing you will have to use :P)), it will take you up to 5 hours and more.
Of course you don't have to use the -vis flag every time you test your changes, but at least for the final compilation it will be necessary. ;)

So... the moonstation is basically finished... I needed a lot more time for scripting than I thought^^ but it was worth it, because Silvan is now very happy that someone actually used his lua-stuff :P
Watch the wiki for some pics and checkout the newest data trunk... ideas which can be realized in the little time left, sure are welcome.

btw: Can someone add a description, how to add the turrets? Or are they pre-pre-alpha? :)

Looks nice :)

And I like your scripts, it's really cool to press the use key and see how the door opens ;)

The station looks very cool! I had never thought that Orxonox will ever get such nice models as the ones you two designed!

Gratz!
