HUD and FPS enhancements

Post by beni » Tue Apr 24, 2007 10:26 pm

My project for this semester:
I want to improve the FPSplayer and the whole gameplay when playing in first person mode. I have my experience from several shooters like "Far Cry", "XIII", "Counter-Strike", "Half-Life 2", "Rainbow Six" series and many more. I know what a player expects from this game mode. I hope I can implement all I want to.

Important things are crosshairs, being able to crouch and change weapon. We need therefore a little bit of an inventory. I'll have a look how it is done in the vertical scroller.

Second issue is the HUD. I want to improve it looks and appearance a lot. Not only change the HUD graphics but implement some movable HUD elements, fading and stuff. The whole thing should become more dynamic.

I'm always happy for inputs and correction of my work. Please tell me. Until then, have a look on my progress on this page.

The ideas look nice. I think you summed it up.

Create an appealing and working HUD first (IIRC Michel had some trouble doing that)... You may add gimmicks (transparency, moving elements) later on.

BOFH Excuse #212: Of course is doesn't work. We've performed a software upgrade.

I see what you mean. I take your advice and will first redesign the HUD for FPS and will then think of dynamics. Makes it easier and more hackable I guess... (not that I want to hack it.. but it may be necessary in the end).

I think a warning is appropriate: The GUI framework is far from finished and you will probably have to fight for every little step. Perhaps you will want to create a mock-up first (some sketches).

Creating a simple GUI first is a good idea.

Looking forward to see the HUD, as you know I love FPS :D
