I also think it is easier to pick vast outer space for the beginning.
The steering in the star wars video seems a bit too simple. It might be ok to fly through these canyons but in space it reduces the game to 2d, as nico said.

One more thing about the tolerance circle around the crosshair: it could also be used to auto-pilot to a given navpoint in cruise-mode. If the navpoint comes to rest inside the circle, the ship steers automatically in this direction. This is probably more comfortable than choosing waypoint, switching on the autopilot, ...

Could someone "compact" this thread please?
