Random Mission Ideas

In this thread you can put any random mission ideas you come along with. They don't need to be fit nor be complete.

Not a mission itself but a mission environment:

Here is another idea: Mercury the innermost planet is too hot to be inhabited (iron melting 400 degrees on the sun side and freezing -200 degrees on the dark side. It has a very slow rotation speed.
There are rumors, that some mysterious people built a base orbiting this planet. The base is always on the sun side so that no observation of the base can be done from behind the Mercury.

Of course this may only be a rumor, but from time to time there are space ships disappearing near Mercury and reappearing weeks later as if nothing happened. Most of them government ships..

How to find the advanced fighter?

Post by nicolasc » Thu Jan 10, 2008 3:00 pm

It's one of my favorite subjects... It is not a typical mission, more sort of a side-quest, and when done correctly the player ends up with a highly advanced ship (i.e ASSF).

The Player hears rumors about some abandoned fighter program which tried to combine alien technology with their own. Most people who searched for that ship either went mad, or suddenly disappeared.
the quest itself is split into 3 separate parts:
  • Finding the ship: During a routine mission (story mission makes it even more fun) the player stumbles upon a large spaceship cemetery - the remnants of a large space battle long forgotten (form the 2nd space race?). Snooping around there, he find a ships that after all this time is still emitting a power signature - not so easy to find, as there is a lot of radiation. A closer look shows, that this might one of the famous ships the rumors were about.
Get a salvage party and retrieve the ship. But instead of getting it up and running, the technician is just confused, and explain that the knowledge has long been lost. He might be able to extract the reactor and some of the weapons. Even taking it to to a government won't help, as they lost the data during some war - or at least that is what they tell.
  • Finding a Manual: During a routine mission to one of the moon many abandoned bases, the player gets - on purpose or not - off track, and finds himself in some old high-tech lab. On closer examination he sees, that there a ton of data about how to create human-alien hybrid technology.
Showing that information to a technician, he tells you that how can now understand how the ship works. Alas some parts are damaged beyond repair, and any try to replace them would mean a massive degradation of the ships capabilities - it would be just another ship.
  • Getting some spare parts: During a salvage operation the player detects some weird energy signature in the vicinity. Following those traces turn up another shipwreck - some kind of stealth transport, invisible to any current sensor technology (, or asheroc ship?) - with some parts in it, that could be used to repair the that mysterious fighter.
Having all 3 parts, enables the player to restore the fighter to its full capabilities.
The spare parts are just some beta ware (Shadow Run player know what I mean - for the rest, 2 level above normal) improvements which could be used on any ship. Together with the manual, the can be easily upgraded to delta ware (again SR talk - 3 levels above normal).
Getting just the ship gives you access to an advanced reactor and some weaponry. In combination with the manual, as said, you can get just another ship, but you won't get anything more from the combination with the spare parts.

As mentioned before, it is just an idea, and not finished yet. And the idea is that the player can get a pretty advanced ship if he does not get too greedy to early... especially as those 3 parts are not directly linked together.

drawbacks and logical questions: What stops the other fractions form just taking any of those parts. I.e the player collects all the stuff, gets it repaired and then it suddenly disappears...
Or does the player have some sort of trusted mechanic, who does that kind of stuff for him - or can the ship only be assembled with a fraction, whose standing is high enough...

cheers
nico

A mission-setting I'd like to have in the game:
After earth was destroyed, parts of the earth's crust were catapulted into the sky, some relicts of the human race still existing on them. I'd like to land on one of those parts. It looks like an asteroid, maybe attached to a magma ball (from earth).
Imagine flying over the asteroids surface, flying through a big valley (there was an ocean before, but there's no more water), reaching the end of the valley, ascending, seeing something artificial, recognizing the Statue of Liberty and the totally destroyed new york of 2xxx behind...
(or some other city/important building of course)
