Having a universe that is alive

So regardless whether there is a mode where the player does not have a mission and just can fly around in the solar system or only missions, we need to have some more or less random occurrences of things happening in the universe that go on without the interaction of the player.

Certain events may trigger a little mini-mission, but I wouldn't even go that far at first.

Since our universe should be alive, there should be spaceships that are not directly involved in our mission and just mind their own businesses. We know this from Freelancer, where you could contact every ship close to you, and they would tell you where they go and why. ("Transporter, shipping food and supplies from Planet XY to spacestation Z")

You also know such events or things happening in GTA, where people get shot at and robbed and even gang fights or a car chase is happening.

For Orxonox I'd like to hear some ideas from you. I came up with some of my own, but I would welcome any input from you. If you have any questions I'm happy to answer them.

Pirates vs. Mercenaries:

Small dog fights from time to time, where the player can choose to ignore them or help one side by destroying their enemies.

Meteor Shower:

Usually we would fly in orbit around a planet. Some planets have strong gravitational forces and may attract big asteroids or many small meteors. The player will have to avoid them, or help spacestations or transporters by clearing the path.

Solar flares & sun storms:

In times of great solar activity we know that unprotected electronics of space equipment can be severely crippled. How about having the player and, needless to say, other ships hide behind larger objects (planets, asteroids or shielded stations) in times of bad solar weather?

Rich people hitching rides into space:

Pretty self-explanatory, right? Ships in space seeking a little profit will pick up wealthy people from the surface and fly around a jovian moon or behind the trail of a comet. The player can chime in in times of financial need as a transport itself, or if the personal transport shuttle needs an armed escort.
