It looks like we have enough money together. I think the time is right to not only change the box but also some ingredients:

The HD is very new, I guess it will be up for 2-3 more years. Does anybody have a computer that he doesn't use anymore and is faster than our current:
700MHz Pentium II
Computer?
We can't pay for it but I think it would be a good idea to replace the old computer because it's really old (and that something breaks is very high).

Who will order the new box?

I think I have a faster Athlon CPU at home. But I'm not sure if other components are suitable for the server. Also my stuff runs for years and may fail sooner than our stuff. But I don't really use my computer anymore, since I have a notebook which is faster and its HD contains everything I need.

Your decision if you want to use that stuff.

I'm already a digitech customer, so I can order that stuff.

Oh, wait a sec. An uncle of mine works for a computer shop. I'll write him an e-mail if he has something similar for a cheaper price in his store. It's located in Zurich too, so that's not a problem I guess?

And if he doesn't not have anything, I'll order that thing from digitech.

Hey guys,

my uncle said I can choose a rack on http://www.supermicro.com/ and get a special price for it. Let's have a look if we find something suitable for us.

hey guys, its been a while since I posted here for the last time... but I've been reading your posts frequently :) I've got an old machine standing at my home in Berne that isn't used anymore (amd athlon 1.9ghz, 512mb ram, corresponding mainboard... but no hds (they either had defects or I already gave them away)). If you guys think that this could be of any use, then let me know... someone would have to pick it at my home, but since Paede's back living in Berne that shouldn't be a too big problem.

These are great news, Beni I suggest to just take the cheapest server case. I guess it is this one:
http://www.supermicro.com/products/chassis/2U/?chs=523
(It looks the cheapest  )

@Lieni: Nice to hear from you! And thanks for the offer of your computer! Can I have your bicycle, too? I would have time to get it perhaps in November but not earlier (since I'm finishing my thesis soon). Have a good time!

Oh, there aren't any prices there? Sorry, haven't have time to have a look. I'll write to my uncle and ask the price for this one. Then, if we have enough money I let him order it.

Please notice, that the case at digitech did not have a power supply while this one has one. Keep that in mind when comparing the prices.

350.- for that thing. The power supply is noisy, but I don't think that's a problem, right? We also need a slimDVD-device and the cooling unit has to be a flat one!

How is the state on the servers? The VSETH server admin migrated all their servers to racks, now our is the only one in the old case :?

I really don't have time to do this. I know that you all have a hard time too, but I hope that someone will find 4h to:
- order the pc
- collect the money
- assemble it (the VSETH admin even offered to do this himself)
It will all take not more than 4-5h.

I can do this. I think I have the best possibilities to make some hours free. I can also advance the money and collect it later on. (Lieni won't be able to give the money soon enough.

I'll order the PC today (meaning I write to my uncle) and I hope I'll get it soon. I don't know about the slim dvd-device and I have no information about the cooling unit. This could give us some problems, when the stuff is too big. But I don't think that you guys know this better than I do, or is this not the case?
