Restructure of sub forums

Many of us have this problem: We want to post something in the forum, discuss something or share a thought about a topic related to Orxonox and no sub forum makes sense to post it to. In the end we don't post or we just put it somewhere or here into the General Discussion sub forum.

I'd like your thoughts about this. Have you any suggestions for sub forums we need or don't need at all?

I like the Bug sub forum, also the Developer Journal forum makes sense I guess.
Also with phpBB3 we have the possibility to have sub sub forums and sub categories. So a whole forum tree is possible without a problem.

I think this post also cries for a administration or organization sub forum :).

I like, you seem to have thought about this hard ^^. What about a additional separation of CC and Coding? Or would this do more harm than good in terms of clarity?

It's possible to separate them, but then we have some "leftovers" like Gameplay (neither CC nor coding) or Developers' Journals (both).

Btw, is "Developers' Journals" correctly spelled (with ' and so)? It's just copy paste from the current forum, but I'm not sure about it.

@x3n: I like your suggestion. Just two things: I can't find an appropriate topic for "Profiling orxonox.exe". What is your suggestion? I probably just missed it.
And maybe there is a better name for the "Orxonox" topic collection. I mean, almost every post in this forum is about orxonox. But "gameplay" certainly doesn't say it all, so I got nothing...

@Spelling: It depends on what exactly you want to express ;)
"Developers' Journals" is my preference because it refers to all developers.

You mean a subforum for this topic? I would probably put it into the Framework subforum, but Coding would work too. Of course none of them is exactly what you need (like a "Performance optimisation and code tweaking" subforum), but I don't want the spread coding related topics all over the board. Thats why my suggestion only contains two coding subforums, "Framework" for everything behind the 'game' (libraries, buildsystem, core-features, maybe objecthierarchy, etc) and "Coding" for the daily business (compiler errors, c++ questions, code structure, etc).

In 90% of the cases it will be easy to chose the right subforum and in the other 10% you're free to pick either Framework or Coding and neither will be wrong.

Yes, beni and me discussed that case and agreed on "Developers' Journals" because this subforum contains several journals of several developers. ;)

I wanted to add something concerning the difference between "Framework" and "Coding" in my suggestion:
The "Coding" subforum is more or less Q and A, like "I want to do xyz, how can this be achieved?" or "Please help me with this problem", while the "Framework" subforum is for discussions about varous topics. So in some sense I wanted to separate planning and implementing, or daily programmers business and important design decisions.

Very well, sounds reasonable to me. I have nothing more to say ;)

Okay then, I'll restructure the forum now.

I'm drunk though, so don't expect too much.. :D

- More restructuration - grouped general, content and coding development forums.
- Moved thousands of topics to the right subforums.
- Added two new subforums: "General Development" and "SVN, Wiki, Forum"
- Renamed "Developers' Journal" to "Developers' Journals"
- Fixed forum permissions

Oh thanks. I thought I screwed something up in the permissions.

What's about the organisation forum? Or might it be that I'm simply not allowed to see them? ^^

Yes, it's for PPS leaders only, sorry ^^ But that's not a big problem, because it's mainly focused on PPS organisation and questions like "what will we do this semester". General development is discussed in the corresponding (public) subforum. :)

Btw, I'm not even sure if we need this organisation forum... the PPS subforum serves as well, but for the moment I'm done.

@beni: Yeah, screwed up and nailed three times.

so, what's the problem if I read those topics in PPS Organisation?

I remember the thread from January 08, where you discussed how to proceed with Orxonox itself (focusing of course to the FS08 PPS). Nevertheless I really didn't feel well about since I actually did contribute quite most of my spare time during HS 07 to Orxonox. And you simply decide kind of 'behind my back' what to do next... Like I was just an employee.
