Orxonox color scheme

Post by Mozork » Wed Nov 10, 2010 2:37 pm

This topic has been split form the Color schemes topic.
On a related note, Felix, Beni and I experimented a little with a general color scheme for Orxonox, here is what we came up with:

So we create a game which pictures the dark future of mankind, where people are struggling to survive on an exahausted planet earth after hundreds of years of pollution and overexploitation, fighting to death in an attempt to catch some food in overpopulated and anarchic colonies on mars, repressed by the power of self-righteous corporations and criminal outlaws, finally facing their ultimate fear, merciless aliens which destroy and kill everything and everyone in sight... and you really think pink and yellow are the best colors to express this mood? :P

Don't be silly: It's lavender and citron. :P

More earnestly, I'd be very interested in some pictures that express in which direction you want the orxonox look to go!

I'd be very happy with everything you find on Death Space except for the shock moments and the monsters. I have not seen anything unpleasant about this game yet.

Lavender and Citron FTW!

I like them and I think the webpage and forum would also look nice. And anyway, keep in mind that it is only a color scheme. It does not mean, that every thing must be designed using these two colors.

So we had a short discussion about this topic in IRC yesterday and seems like some of us (including me) favor a darker, maybe more 'grown up', color scheme (for example like Dead Space).

Another proposal was to use a neutral style (black, white, silver, etc) and a 3D scene in the background (maybe blurred). Something like that was used in Half Life 2 (http://www.mobygames.com/images/i/14/07/184107.jpeg).

To make another example, have a look at Unreal Tournament 3: packshot and menu. They use this simple red/white style for the dvd cover, wallpapers, website, and menu (btw, I dislike the menu in UT3, i'm just talking about colors now). And the colors make sense, in some way - red for blood (and the red team), white as neutral background.

Now let's talk about Orxonox again: How do pink and yellow make sense in Orxonox? I'm not saying it's wrong or ugly, but if we use a color like pink we should have a very good reason for it ;)

So to go a little further, what colors would make sense in Orxonox? Some examples:
1) If planet mars plays an important role in the story, we could use a rusty red as one of the main colors.
2) What's the color of the thruster of the players ship? Right now it's light blue (or a team color), but it could be something else. Note that the thruster will be visible in most ingame screenshots, so it will be a very important feature in the eyes of an outsider.
3) Orx... I don't know too much about it, but as far as I remember the story, it's some kind of alien material. What is it's color? Does it glow?

Hope you get an idea of what I'm talking about. ;)

Don't look at this as a proposal, these are just some random colors that could be 'rusty metal' and 'shiny orx'

I must say, I like where this is going.

I tried to go in that direction a bit (also inspired by this picture: http://joejesus.deviantart.com/art/Arrival-81083232 )

This is what came out. Better, worse? And if either, what could make it better?

I like it a lot.. I'd round up the corners a bit and some nonsensical decoration of borders would be cool (small wheels or just random squares or hexagons or something)
the colors are great though.

Please let me emphasize that the original purpose of this thread was about the texture of the models and not the GUI ;)

I split the topics, to keep things separate.

That was just something I hacked up in 10 minutes, so I'll play with some "textures" for the border and try to make it a little rounder...

About the Orx.
I think it only makes sense to include that color in the color scheme if either Orx isn't too rare for it to be weird to show up occasionally or we can use the color for other stuff, too.

Ok, rounded the corners a bit, and added some nonsensical decoration. ;)

Also the second image is the color scheme I used.
