Love the nonsensical decoration. We should have different themes of nonsensical decorations. Like Hexagons, these spikes of yours and other forms

I've been experimenting a little bit with the icon and here's what came out:

I like it too, but I think there should be some stronger separation between the ship and the planet, even in the big picture it's not easy to distinguish ship from planet and in smaller versions it's not clear at all what the logo illustrates. A more primitive image with more contrast would be better for smaller versions of the logo.

I agree. The idea is nice, but grey on brown is generally a bad idea. Following beni's advice to use more contrast, you could simply invert the background - use a bright sun on a dark background instead of a dark planet on a white background. The spaceship flying in front of the sun would be mainly visible as a silhouette.

I attached a very simple sketch.

Very nice sketch. You can see that especially with the small versions that the important features are preserved. Also a grayscale or monochromatic version would work there.

I agree insofar as that the contrast (especially for the low resolution icons) is insufficient. However i think it is important that the icon reflects the color scheme, thus rather than invert the planet I would try to make the spaceship brighter to achieve better contrast.

I agree. I think x3n's point was only related to the contrast and not the color scheme in particular.

That's true, although the question is, do we already have a definite color scheme? And instead of creating a logo that fits the color scheme, we could also create a color scheme that's based on the logo.

I know you already spent some work with the color scheme and the GUI, but I think the point is valid and we rather discuss it now. Otherwise we may find in a year that it's impossible to create a good logo that fits the color scheme. Maybe we need a more sophisticated approach than just picking two random colors like we did before.

I once said that colors should have a "meaning" (like rusty metal, engine glow, or something). If a color is part of the logo, that could also be a reason. Additionally one could use a 3-color-scheme: background, foreground and highlight.

Unfortunately I'm a rather bad designer.

I think we should create a color scheme that fits to the game we want to create, and then design the icon accordingly, not the other way around.
The two colors we chose should yield a decent contrast, the problem in this case is the ship, which is just grey.
I don't think that we can create a color scheme for which it is impossible to create a good icon. So I'll do some more experimenting.
That being said, I didn't intend for the icon to be definite, I didn't invest enough time for that, I just considered it a good solution for the time I was willing to invest.

Just a sidenote: It seems that we have multiple logos in use now.

Debian package:

Mac OS X:
Damian's version of the logo.

And then there is Fabian's version.

I think we should agree an a commen consensus. What do you think?
