Inspired by Beni's thread about "Pushing Ice", I started to think about your tastes and how you could give me a few hints what to read in exchange for a few tips from my side.
We all know the feeling once you are in a library / bookshop / DVD store and try to find something good, which you don't know... something good, which yo don't already know - well these two facts are exactly opposed to eachother. To help you a little, here are my personal favourites. Some books are part of a series, but I don't advise you to read the whole series. In this case I simply wrote the book's name.

My favourite SF books (in order of favouritism):
  • William Gibson - Neuromancer
  • Stephen Donaldson - The Gap Series
  • Peter F. Hamilton - The Nightdawn Trilogy
  • Stanislav Lem - Cyberiad
  • Alastair Reynolds - Chasm City
  • Isaac Asimov - The Foundation Trilogy
  • Aldous Huxley - Brave new World
  • Ursula leGuin - The right Hand of Darkness
  • Frank Herbert - Dune
  • George Orwell - Nineteen Eighty-Four
  • Isaac Asimov - The Robots of Dawn
My favourite SF films (in order of favouritism):
  • Blade Runner
  • Alien 1 & 2
  • Star Wars 4-6
  • Akira
  • Ghost in the Shell
  • THX1138
  • Terminator 2
  • Twelve Monkeys
  • The fifth Element
  • Appleseed
  • Dune
  • Mad Max 2 & 3
  • Dr. Strangelove
  • Clockwork Orange
  • Wonderful Days
  • Star Trek VI: The undiscovered Country
  • Johnny Mnemonic
  • Predator
My favourite SF TV series (in order of favouritism):
  • Battlestar Galactica
  • Firefly
  • Babylon 5

Wow, thanks a lot :)
I just added those books that are available on amazon (unfortunately I couldn't find all of 'em) to my wishlist http://www.amazon.de/gp/registry/wishli ... 97-0242930
(hoping for times when I'll have enough time to read again ;))
