We could also use the master server to check for updates right? Maybe downloading it directly, providing some mirrors and similar. Just an idea that occured to me that I wanted to share.

i think it's a good idea extending the masterserver a bit
but using it to download updates directly might be a little bit difficult in order to not conflict with packet management systems and distributions ...
but we could for example use it to inform the user about the most recent software version available

That's alright, notification is nice as well. I wouldn't download the newest trunk, but only releases. Sure Linux users will get an update in the PPA every once in a while, but we could also offer additional content that is not in the packages (we talked about that in the last ThinkTank). And Windows users could update inside the application.

Scheusso,

You worked on the Masterserver branch recently, right?
How is the progress there? Was the branch already merged back into the mainline?

As the exams are over now, I'll have time again to continue working on the branch.

cheers

The masterserver branch was merged in r7739 into presentation branch and with that also into trunk. So if you want to continue your work I would suggest to make a masterserver2 branch out of either trunk or one of the recent branches.

I can do that for you if you want to ?!
