Interplanetary transport ship

Post by Nowic » Wed May 02, 2007 9:39 pm

I will model an interplanetary military space transporter (humans). It is able to enter and leave the atmosphere and takes off vertically.

* Wiki: https://dev.orxonox.net/wiki/SpaceShipTransporter
* Ticket: https://dev.orxonox.net/ticket/217

-> sketches scanned and uploaded

Sketches.... what sketches? ;) I bumped into the page, before the sketches were up, and after the latest post was made....

I like the idea... sketches look fine. [Note to myself: add sketch utilisation to the modeling process]

Looking forward to the first models.

cheers

The sketches look awesome. Looking forward to see it modeled. Is there a possibility that the player can control this ship?

I uploaded a first modeling screenshot. I'm not happy with the proportions of the ship. It's too long and not elegant. It should definitely look more "sexy". Many details are still missing too. :roll:

@patrick: Thanks. You won't be able to play it, as far as I know, but it could be used as a player ship in future missions. Maybe a special ship class would be needed to animate the engines.

Should I model an open cargo door? (but then the model couldn't be used for flying anymore)

This is not mutually exclusive... model the bay door as a separate object, that way it can be moved into a position in which it's needed. (provided that it is a simple door - aka. only one (or two) simple flap[s])

Or it could be used in the fps parts... (although I am not quite sure how)

I like the model, but I think the ship looks like a whale... maybe it's better if the tip of the ship weren't pointing downwards!?!?

Bit story snippet for the Orca:
"The Orca is a military transport ship. It is very well armored, but is not used at the front lines, because it is too big and too clumsy. It's clumsiness is compensated by its high speed and the good armor makes it the perfect ship for the transport of valuable or hazardous goods. Also the Orca is a hybrid atmosphere-space ship. Its widely movable thrusters are perfect to land where normal ships cannot get to. So the Orca can fly into areas where troops may be stationed and where it is difficult too send in back up. The Orca is mainly a transporter for equipment and arms, but there are Orcas with modifications so they can be used as troop transporters."

Create the opening door as a mounting point; a class can be created to support this.
Will the model be used in this presentation?

@all: thanks!

@beni: great description, I'll add it to the wiki page.
@patrick: Good idea, but not for this presentation. ;)

Yes, it will be used in this presenstation if the hangar is ready too. x3n?

Smoothing done:

I hope you get this in time....

the wings/engine-attachments seem a bit weak... I would have made them a bit thinker, at least the aft one...
